The application of hard,modern internal plasters has the effect of sealing the inside,thereby blocking the internal escape of trapped moisture and also the inabilty to absorbe any new moisture created inside ie:condensation.

Unfortunately a lot of old houses have been re-plastered in recent years with sterile modern gypsum plaster or hard cement render,in a misguided attempt to solve DAMP problems.

Modern gypsum plasters are generally incompatible on old solid walls that need to breathe,they tend to retain DAMP where as lime can happily tolerate moisture passing through it.

Modern gypsum plasters are highly rigid and inflexible and will have a tendency to crack as the old walls continue to naturally flex.
